Chowder provides a cold medicine-filled dummy (made from a vacuum cleaner and some other objects) that should cause the house to sleep long enough for them to douse the furnace. Officer Landers and Officer Lister thwart their plan upon arrival and they are arrested when Officer Landers finds the cold medicine that Chowder stole from the pharmacy his father worked at inside the dummy. DJ, Chowder and Jenny escapes the police car, but were trapped in the house. In the basement they find a collection of toys accumulated from Nebbercracker's lawn, as well as a door that opens to a shrine containing the body of Nebbercracker's wife, Constance the Giantess, encased in cement. DJ, Chowder, and Jenny force the house to vomit them outside by grabbing its uvula. Nebbercracker arrives home alive, revealing that Constance's spirit is within the house and that he did not eat her but instead had given her some of the happiest times in her life.

Provoked, she attempted to chase them off as Nebbercracker tries to stop her, only to be knocked out as she stumbled and fell into the unfinished basement with her body accidentally being coated in cement, suffocating her. Nebbercracker then finished the house's construction in Constance's memory, but her vengeful spirit soon merged with it. Over the years, Nebbercracker feigned aggression to protect innocent people from her. On the day before Halloween, 12-year-old Dustin James "D.J." Walters documents his elderly neighbor, Horace Nebbercracker, stealing a little girl's tricycle and scaring her away from his house, one of many similar incidents that have occurred. That same day, D.J.'s parents leave for a convention, placing him in the care of his teenage babysitter Elizabeth, or Zee.

Running Time

As a young man, he met Constance, then an unwilling member of a circus freak show, and fell in love with her despite her obesity. One Halloween, as children tormented her due to her size, Constance tried chasing them away but lost her footing and fell to her death in the basement. Nebbercracker had finished the house, knowing it was what she would have wanted but, aware that Constance's spirit made the house come alive, he pretended to hate children in order to protect them. Set in October of 1997, a little girl named Eliza rides her tricycle around the neighborhood, singing along, but she hits the lawn, and it gets stuck. As she tries to get out, she pedals to get it free but it's no use. Just then, Horace Nebbercracker snaps at her and takes the tricycle and removes the wheel to tempt her to go away.

Digital

At first the house, which sits on a perfectly ordinary suburban block, seems like nothing more than the dilapidated home of Mr. Nebbercracker, a cranky old man with bad teeth, a gruesome comb-over and Steve Buscemi’s voice. It quickly becomes clear — to a plucky boy-detective type named DJ and his two young sidekicks, and then to everybody else — that the ramshackle Victorian is possessed by a malevolent, demonic force. And since this is a movie aimed at an audience for whom the grosser bodily functions are a perpetual source of laughs, it vomits them up again. The house roars, belches, spits fire and in the end turns out to be...Kathleen Turner. This rollicking chill-ride follows the animated misadventures of three teens who believe that an old ramshackle dwelling in their neighborhood houses a man-eating entity that is feasting on the locals.

When they first met, Constance was an unwilling participant in a circus freak show who was ridiculed for her obesity. Nebbercracker developed feelings for her as he helped her escape and they later got married. On Halloween, during their house's construction, some children began tormenting Constance.

Nebbercracker stands up to Constance and realizes how much trouble she has caused recently, making her feel remorse for her actions. Nebbercracker then resolves to put Constance out of her misery by blowing her up with a dynamite. Infuriated by this “betrayal”, Constance grabs her husband, intent on killing him too.

In any case, modesty can be numbered among the picture’s virtues, along with ingenuity. “Monster House” is unpretentious, smartly written (by Dan Harmon, Rob Schrab and Pamela Pettler) and a lot of fun. It was produced by Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, written by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab, and directed by Gil Kenan. The battle between Chowder and Constance causes them both to fall down into the bed of the empty lake; the house falls apart in the process. But, as DJ, Jenny, and Chowder rejoice, Constance reassembles the house, making it look like a massive misshapen bundle of wood, brick, and shingles. This causes Constance’s anger to really shoot through the roof; she turns the trees flanking the house into hands/arms and feet/legs, pulls the house out of the earth and chases after DJ, Nebbercracker, Jenny, and Chowder.

Enraged, it breaks free and chases the group to a construction site. Nebbercracker attempts to distract the house so he can dynamite it, but the house notices and attacks him. Chowder fights it off with an excavator and DJ is given the dynamite. While Chowder distracts the house, DJ and Jenny climb to the top of a crane, and DJ throws the dynamite into the chimney, causing the house to explode. The trio then see Nebbercracker with Constance's ghost before she ascends into the afterlife.

During the chase, Nebbercracker is forced to stop and rest, while Constance continues going after the kids. Some of the scary parts may be too intense for very young or very sensitive children. As in most ghost stories, the fright stands in for other emotions — grief, disappointment, loneliness — and the film’s climactic sequences combine hair-raising sensation with dreamy and delicate pathos. The plain suburban setting becomes (as it did in “E.T.” and Mr. Zemeckis’s “Back to the Future” movies) a zone of enchantment, in no small part because it seems so real.

However, they realize that the house knows better than to come alive when adults are present. Three teens discover that their neighbor's house is really a living, breathing, scary monster. Nebbercracker returns from the hospital alive and well and it is revealed that Constance is the house.

The three then witness the house consuming a dog, making them realize the house waits for its prey to get close enough before devouring it. Calling the police, the youthful trio approach the house, thinking about the carnage waiting to happen that evening. The house tries to tempt Chowder with his basketball, but DJ and Jenny stop him from taking the bait. It is then that the cops show up; DJ, Chowder, and Jenny attempt to tell them about the nature of the house.

The appeal of gothic gardening lies in its capacity to create a landscape that feels both historical and otherworldly, making it a particularly immersive and chilling garden style. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a push against the industrial revolution with gardens that favored traditional craftsmanship and the garden with the home.

Making the most of less space, urban gardeners are growing in raised beds and containers. The post-World War II economic boom resulted in the rise of suburban homes with lawns, foundation plantings and backyard gardens as standard features. Modernist gardens appeared from the 1930s to 1960s. The gardens of this time began to reflect modern architecture with minimalistic designs and the use of new materials like concrete. This period favored function and form with an emphasis on simplicity. Many trend forecasting experts predict that traditional design will be bigger than ever in 2023 and perhaps no retailer knows this better than Ballard Designs.

It received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed $142 million worldwide against a $75 million budget. It received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, but lost to Happy Feet and Cars, respectively. Constance then feasts on the police car; DJ, Chowder, and Jenny are able to escape from the car, but are then trapped inside the house. And for the most part they talk and behave like real kids, too, or at least like characters drawn from the rich tradition of plucky, intellectually curious kiddie-lit heroes.

Landers and Lister then inadvertently foil the plan as the former discovers the stolen medicine; as they attempt to arrest the trio, the house soon eats them all. Separated from the officers, the children explore the sleeping house and end up in its basement. They find all the toys Nebbercracker had stolen and a shrine to his wife, Constance the Giantess, whose skeletal remains are encased in cement. The house soon awakens and attacks them, but they trigger its gag reflex by grabbing its uvula equivalent (a chandelier), forcing it to vomit them outside. The next morning, a Westbrook Prep student named Jenny Bennett is selling Halloween candies. DJ and Chowder see her going to Mr. Nebbercracker's house and they rush out to warn her catching her before she is eaten by the house.

It was released in approximately 200 theaters equipped for new RealD Cinema digital 3-D stereoscopic projection. Since the original source material was "built" in virtual 3-D, it created a very rich stereoscopic environment. Shortly afterwards, Bones sees his kite in the doorway of Nebbercracker's house, but he is consumed by the house while retrieving it. Meanwhile, DJ meets up with Chowder, and the two investigate the house, but flee when it comes alive and attacks them. The next morning, a girl named Jenny Bennett is selling Halloween candy.

DJ is descended from Encyclopedia Brown (perhaps by way of Jimmy Neutron, but never mind), and Jenny bears some temperamental resemblance to Harriet the Spy. I’m sure Chowder will remind you of someone in your fifth-grade class, wherever or whenever that was. The children, left to their own devices, must conquer the evil that, all but unnoticed, flourishes in their midst. With the house destroyed, Constance’s spirit is released and able to go on to Heaven. Nebbercracker is heartbroken over the loss of his house and his wife, but is grateful to DJ, Chowder, and Jenny for freeing them from all these years of imprisonment. One of the spooky archetypes of childhood imagination — the dark, mysterious house across the street — is literally brought to life in “Monster House,” a marvelously creepy animated feature directed by Gil Kenan.

During the credits after everyone leaves, the house's victims emerge from the basement unharmed, including Bones, who discovers that Zee is now dating Skull.

The tap water is purified and safe to drink, so if you're someone who needs a bottle of water, bring a reusable one with you. Some of the recent posts make it seem as though there's a Titanic-esque system in place that prevents people in the least expensive cabins from using the same facilities as the rest of the general ship population. As the cast of characters slowly takes shape through TikTok posts, there has already been at least one claim of a passenger departing the cruise early, as though this is some kind of reality show. Since this is a first-of-its-kind sailing for Royal Caribbean, I don’t think anyone really knows what to expect, but we are making some assumptions. Ultimately, the captain's top concern is safety, which means the ship will divert wherever necessary in order to keep the vessel, passengers and crew out of harm's way.

They might include small things like priority boarding, the use of a dedicated onboard lounge, free Wi-Fi or laundry, and a welcome cocktail reception when the sailing begins. Social media is largely to blame, with new-to-cruise influencers posting TikTok content about things that are new to them but not necessarily new in the world of cruising. World: Cruise Lines

On a world cruise, you’re able to check off dozens of your bucket list destinations, all during one extended once-in-a-lifetime trip. When this happens on a voyage that's already underway, cruise lines will usually refund port taxes and fees for any ports missed, as well as shore excursions purchased through the cruise line. However, per the terms and conditions that every passenger agrees to in order to sail, cruisers are not entitled to additional compensation in these cases. On Dec. 10, 2023, Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas departed on the Ultimate World Cruise, the line's first-ever around-the-world sailing – a 274-night voyage that's set to call on 60 countries. It’s also important to be aware of any visa requirements or travel restrictions for the destinations you plan to visit. While not all cruise lines may offer this flexibility, many do accommodate such requests to enhance the passenger experience.

As for work after the cruise, she has no definitive plans, but has been posting about the trip on TikTok and is "enjoying the creator space." Kuther attributed that to a rise in remote-friendly jobs like content creation, particularly among younger people. “This ability to travel and work from wherever you are has opened up such a younger demographic and also more demand,” she said.

Buenos Aires is a charming European style city with the perfect combination of new world characteristics mixed with old world history and culture.

Perhaps these online world cruise chronicles will convince someone who hasn't sailed before to give it a try. Either way, it's important to get the facts right if you're going to share information or commentary. With Royal Caribbean, you can order and pay for drinks a la carte or purchase a soda or alcohol package for a per-day cost for the entire length of the voyage. There are many reasons — including emergencies and bad behavior — why someone might leave the sailing prematurely.

See the beautiful sights of Cape Town, South Africa’s most visited city, which offers cruisers natural beauty, plentiful wine, historical significance and a sense of peace. A 2018 study from the Cruise Lines International Association stated that 50 percent of cruise ship passengers on average were over the age of 50 and almost a third of that group were older than 70. According to the Maritime Injury Guide, which noted that cruise ships tend to carry between 3,000 and 5,000 passengers, it's estimated that around 200 people die on a cruise every year. When influencers began posting about the Ultimate World Cruise on social media, people lost their minds over the idea of nine months at sea.

Their award-winning itineraries feature late-night port calls, which include overnight stays on land. This interesting perk is part of Princess Cruises’ More Ashore Program. Thanks to this, you’ll have the unique opportunity to discover the nighttime beauty of iconic cities like Dubai, Barcelona and Sydney, a highlight that’s often not possible to experience on other world cruises. Besides those famous world cities, Princess world cruises also include several less-frequented ports like Venice and Cape Verde, as well as numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and countless excursions and activities.

There's afternoon tea, a culinary theatre for cooking classes, ballroom dancing and kettles in cabins for a morning brew in bed. Olsen is the line's regional departures — meaning there's no need to schlep down to Southampton if you live in Southport. We adore Celebrity Cruises' Edge-class series, which strikes the right balance with a relaxed vibe and fanciful design, including chic Kelly Hoppen-designed spaces. Cunard's Canary Islands voyages are no-fly itineraries from Southampton.

What to pack for a Canary Islands and Madeira cruise?

Explore the city's delightful old quarter and the district of Parque Santa Catalina, with quirky shops and sidewalk cafes. It has a valuable collection of local archaeological objects. The Casa de Colon Museum, a 15th-century military governor's residence, is said to be where Columbus stayed before he set sail for the New World. The Canary Islands are extremely popular with Brits, especially in winter because they're some of the closest locations guaranteed to have warm, sunny weather. The Canaries are also popular stops on spring and fall repositioning cruises, which tend to draw a more international passenger base. Because the islands are governed by Spain, Spanish is the official language; cruisers will find most locals speak English, however.

Beyond the loud holiday resorts and buzzing nightlife lie wild forests, volcanic craters, bizarre lunar landscapes and ancient towns. These exotic islands certainly have the capacity to surprise. With its miles of beaches and sunny weather, Fuerteventura is popular for those wanting to get stuck into some water sports, especially windsurfing.

The palm tree-lined Plaza de Espana, the center of town, is home to an artisans' market that sells lacework, embroidery and leatherwork and has a worth-seeing church, El Salvador. There is a Naval Museum nearby, which was built as a full-size replica of Columbus' ship, Santa Maria. The 17th-century Castillo de Santa Catarina fortress overlooking the waterfront is a national monument. Outside the city, the peaceful island with black-sand beaches is particularly attractive to hikers and is famed for its flora and fauna. The Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente, an 18-square-mile nature reserve, is a tapestry of pine forests, waterfalls and walking trails. Tenerife, the biggest island, is dominated by Mt Teide and the Teide National Park.

The terrain can be rocky and uneven in places, so closed robust shoes will help you to explore comfortably. There are 20 restaurants and bars, including the seaside-themed Snack Shack for casual poolside meals and Kora La for Indian. There's an indoor cinema, a Sports & Family Deck, kids clubs and nighttime entertainment including movies shown on a big-screen under moonlight and excellent West End-style shows. Malaga lies on Spain’s beautiful Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) and is famous for its cosmopolitan energy and cultural variety. Historical monuments serve as a backdrop to the city’s modern character and of course, it’s gorgeous beaches.

This famous lagoon has a few pleasure and fishing boats bobbing on the water in front of a string of whitewashed houses. This creates the feeling of Greece...in the middle of the Atlantic. Also called the ‘Pearl on the Ocean’, the capital of Madeira, Funchal, is filled with fine beaches and beautiful gardens. You will be amazed by the breathtaking scenery surrounded by banana plantations, lush greenery and vineyards. Either relax in Funchal's Botanical Gardens or for a little more physical exertion, enjoy the "levada" walks (the paths alongside the mini canals) throughout the island.

In Lanzarote, see the architecture and sculptures of César Manrique, who is credited with helping to put Canary Islands tourism on the map. In Tenerife, visit one of its many restaurants to try the local specialty of roasted potatoes with mojo sauce. Several cruise lines -- including Saga, Marella, P&O, Fred Olsen, Cunard and MSC -- offer Canary Islands itineraries. Tend to call on ports in Spain, Portugal or Madeira en route.

MS Marco Polo Cruise and Maritime Voyages

marco polo cruise ship

Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. As Cruise Hive reported on November 24, 2020, MV Astor has already been beached at the Aliaga ship breaking facility in Turkey. Pacific Dawn, which was designated to be a ‘cryptocurrency’ ship called Satoshi, is currently at anchor outside Colon, Panama, but will also be scrapped eventually unless a buyer is found soon. One of the oldest sailing ocean liners today, it’s wonderful to see this piece of heritage still serving paying passengers.

MS Marco Polo  –  Cruise and Maritime Voyages

At the time of booking we secured a three person outside view cabin for £59 per person, for the one night. MS Marco Polo is a truly unique boat amongst the modern mega-ships that cruise the oceans today, but can she keep up with what guests expect in 2019? MS Marco Polo single cabins are staterooms that can be booked with single-occupancy rates (no single supplement required).

First Global Seafood Certification Awarded to Holland America

The distance between Portsmouth & Southsea station and the Portsmouth Cruise Terminal is 2 miles. We grabbed an Uber which took approximately 10 minutes in moderate traffic. The last planned by CMV cruise for Marco Polo was a 13-day Norwegian Fjords itinerary leaving from Harwich and returning to Portsmouth. Get a feel for life onboard the Marco Polo by browsing through the image gallery.

CMV Marco Polo Review

Marco Polo was refurbished in November 2014 at Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen (shipyard in Vlissingen Holland). The work was done by Damen (ship-repair and vessel conversion company). Drydock 2014 featured an extensive survey and regular maintenance works - hull washing-painting, lifeboats maintenance-recertification, valves overhaul, gangway platforms repair. There was hope she would sail for Offshore Solutions Unlimited but sadly since been removed from their web site and beached. Four other former CMV vessels were also put up for auction and have now been sold to another line or for scrap. Usually, in these cases, a ship that’s set to be scrapped will remain just off the coast for up to several days to prepare for a safe beaching.

Complimentary in-cabin Continental breakfast is available between 7 – 10 am (cereals, bread, pastries, yogurt, fruits, juices, hot drinks). The small library (Livingston Lounge) offers a decent selection of books, magazines, playing cards or other games. The photo gallery to order pictures from the cruise and the Internet Cafe are among the other amenities. Waldorf restaurant's decor is pleasant, however not quite remarkable.

marco polo cruise ship

In 2015, the cruise ship celebrated its 50th anniversary with 2 themed voyages. "First Commemorative Anniversary Cruise" from the UK to Canada and Greenland, departures from Rosyth (July 23) and from Tilbury (July 24). The 36-night roundtrip visited Nova Scotia, Montreal, Quebec, and St Lawrence River. The "Second Commemorative Cruise" from the UK to Canada from Tilbury (September 7) was a 35-days roundtrip to Canada via Amsterdam Holland and Cherbourg France. Just like many other older cruise ships, she became a victim of the global pandemic and the suspension of operations.

Marco Polo  was also brought up to standard for the new SOLAS rules (SOLAS stands for Safety of Life at Sea). Spending her time in the Orient and the waters of Antarctica she quickly gained a solid reputation. She even carried a helicopter during her Antarctic trips so wildlife could be spotted. In 2002 Orient Lines was sold to Norwegian Cruise Lines and for a short time she sailed with fleetmate Crown Odyssey (until 2003). It was an enjoyable 24 hours aboard a vintage ocean liner, a truly unique experience that we’re all glad we had. The crew and staff aboard MS Marco Polo were, for the most part, excellent.

Weighing in at a diminutive 19,860 gross tonnes and 176 metres long she is by far the smallest cruise ship I’ve sailed on – in fact she’s about a tenth of the size of the Meraviglia which I sailed on in April. In 1984 the ship joined CTC Cruises Australia's fleet with Holiday cruises. In 1991, "The Alex" (as Aussies called the vessel) was purchased by the British entrepreneur Gerry Herrod, who took it to Greece to be re-built over the following 3-year period.

Orient lines was later bought by NCL who in turn were bought by Star Cruises. The three hot tubs were a welcome addition, they’re two decks up from the main lido deck. These were very crowded during our sailing, I imagine partly because the main pool was closed.

With 496 cruises aboard 524 ships from 54 cruise lines we're confident that we'll have exactly what you're looking for. We believe our smaller more intimate ships offer a leisurely and traditional home from home country house style of cruising with the emphasis very much on personal service and going that extra mile. In Greece, the vessel was rebuilt as a true cruise ship, also receiving new engines. She was resold two months later for approximately $4 million to an Indian company,[36] reached the scrapyards of Alang, India on 13 January 2021[13][37] and was beached and scrapped.[36][38] Scrapping commenced on 28 March 2021. I’ve never shared a cabin with more than one other person before, but due to the generous size of the cabin and plenty of storage space it was far more enjoyable than I had anticipated. The beds were also incredibly comfortable and suitable for my ~6ft height.

If that's you, or you have other electrical equipment you wish to take, remember your adaptors. On deck 10, the Jade Wellness Center offers a superb range of beauty treatments, including hairstyling, manicures, pedicures, facials, and massages to soothe weathered souls and worn sea legs. The higher-category cabins have marble detailing with a tub/shower combination with solid door. Smaller rooms have fairly standard, modular-style bathrooms with tiled floor and a small shower stall. Expect a scuffed sink or stained grout, typical of a ship older than three years.

GENERAL RESTRICTIONSCruise fares listed are cruise only in U.S. dollars, per person, based on double occupancy. Full brochure fares may not have resulted in actual sales in all stateroom categories and may not have been in effect during the last 90 days. Promotional fares may remain in effect after the expiration date. Air promotion applies to roundtrip flights only from select Viking Cruises U.S. gateways and includes airport-to-ship or hotel transfers, air taxes and air fuel surcharges.

The Marco Polo lounge is the place to go for show tunes and high kicks. For more sedate music, head to the Palm Garden for classical music and afternoon tea. Scott’s Bar has cabaret, variety acts, and dancing, while bingo and cocktails are popular in the Captain’s Club, where the resident pianist plays relaxing melodies throughout the day and night. The Columbus Lounge is another option for a pre-dinner or post-theater drink. Due to political unrest in Hong Kong China, in early-January 2020, CMV canceled the planned for 2021 "Grand Oriental Odyssey".

We had some wonderful waiters who quickly remembered our names even though we were only onboard one night / two days. There are also a surprisingly large number of bars for a ship of this size and we always found somewhere to sit – something that can’t be said about many larger ships. The space is a very traditional cruise line main dining room, but on a smaller scale.

If getting onboard pronto is important to you, consider an upgrade to a Junior Suite. You'll get priority embarkation at departure ports, plus 'At Your Leisure' disembarkation. It's a great idea for an extra-special trip, as you'll also receive a welcome bottle of Champagne, along with fresh flowers on arrival. Hair dryers are provided in the cabins, but some passengers prefer to have their own high-powered dryers or hair straighteners.
